On April 30th, 2014, we hosted the fifth in a series of transatlantic workshops in the immersive online technology Second Life. The topic of discussion for this workshop is the use of social media in emergency health management. PhD candidate, Emma Comrie reported her research to date on cross-national comparison of the use of Twitter to discuss risk events between the UK and Canada.
The workshop wasl be chaired by Dr. Calvin Burns.

Presenter Bios:
Emma Comrie is a PhD candidate at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. Emma’s research focuses on how risk events are attenuated or amplified in social media, particularly Twitter. She will be presenting some observations from a comparative analysis of social media use by governments in Canada and the UK. She has a BSc in Mathematics and an MSc in Operational Research.
Alec Morton has degrees from the University of Manchester and the University of Strathclyde. He has worked for Singapore Airlines, the National University of Singapore, and the London School of Economics, and been on secondment at the National Audit Office. His main interests are in decision analysis and management science, especially applied to healthcare management and environmental protection, and he is one of the developers of the STAR toolkit sponsored by the Health Foundation. His papers have won awards from the International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research and the Society for Risk Analysis, and his recent book Portfolio Decision Analysis with Jeff Keisler and Ahti Salo won the INFORMS Decision Analysis Society publication award.
